How to Sell My Car in Chicago
- Remove the vehicle’s license plates. Remove garage door opener. Clear Homelink garage code, remove I-pass, remove personal information from glove compartment ie. vehicle registration, insurance cards...
- Supply the buyer with a valid, signed, and dated title certificate at the time of sale. Both the seller and the buyer will need to complete the title assignment section. Seller should then make a copy of the title front and back.
- Complete the Notice of Sale form attached to the bottom of the title and mail it to the IL Secretary of State.
- Prepare a bill of sale for the buyer and keep a copy for yourself. A bill of sale will include the buyer and seller’s names, current addresses, phone numbers, signatures, sales price of the vehicle & odometer reading, the vehicle’s identification number, make, model, and year.
- Complete a Seller’s Report of Sale. It will release you from responsibility for the vehicle.
- Gather maintenance records to help increase the value of your vehicle.
- Supply warranty documents for the new owner if applicable.
- If selling your car for cash be sure to meet buyer at the bank or police station.
- If you're receiving a cashier's check as payment be sure to verify the authenticity of the cashier's check.
- It is recommended that you ask to see a prospective buyer's driver's license before going on a test drive.
- For your personal safety, it is best if you do not show the vehicle to a stranger by yourself. You may also want to meet the stranger at a safe location such as a police station. If you must show your car at your residence, have someone there with you.
